    Green Flamingos – Eco-Justice Challenge

College Park is committed to promoting and maintaining environmentally friendly practices in our church and community. We believe that environmental stewardship is a religious value and a moral responsibility This month’s eco-justice challenge is to reduce our water usage. Water is a finite resource, and reducing our “water footprint” is necessary for a healthy planet. Consider this: about 6,800 gallons of water is required to grow a day’s food for a family of four. Think about ways in which you can reduce your water footprint this month. Take a shorter shower, don’t pre-wash dishes before the dishwasher, install a low-flush toilet in your home. Maybe you could even purchase or make a…

    Green Flamingos Eco–Justice Challenge

College Park is committed to promoting and maintaining environmentally friendly practices in our church and community.  We believe that environmental stewardship is a religious value and a moral responsibility. This month’s eco-justice challenge is: Create your own green cleaners! Spring is officially here, and with that comes the often dreaded spring cleaning. This year, instead of using cleaners that leach toxic chemicals into our water and soil, try making your own cleaners. They are easy to make, cheaper, and better for you and the environment! Here’s a really easy all-purpose spray recipe: 2 cups water 1 cup hydrogen peroxide ¼ cup lemon juice Find more recipes from this website: http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/20-diy-green-cleaning-recipes-141129…

    3 Nickels Campaign 2017

College Park’s Three Nickels program is one way that we demonstrate our love for people living and dying in extreme poverty around the world. The yearly goal of Three Nickels is to have 100 College Park families or individuals pledge to give at least $1 per week, which equals 15¢ (three nickels) per day. In the past eight years, we’ve supported Heifer International, Pennies for Peace, Haiti earthquake relief, Syrian refugee relief, Watering Malawi, Soles 4 Souls, Food for the Poor, Micro loans for villages in Northern Thailand, Operation Smile, Doctors Without Borders and many other worthy programs. Last year, we gave $5,710! For 2017, the Missions Committee decided to support…

News Features About Syrian Toddler & College Park

Below are many news stories about the tragic mauling of the toddler son of one of the Syrian refugee families that College Park Baptist Church is helping. After the attack on Valentine’s Day, there was a tremendous outpouring of help from the community. A GoFundMe campaign raised $40,000 to help with upcoming medical and household expenses. Since the church was already coordinating a move for them to a better home in east Greensboro, many members and friends completely set up a new apartment and cleaned out their previous home so they will not have to return. Read more about our Syrian refugee family support and how you can help. News &…

    Helping Local Syrian Refugee Families

College Park is helping two Syrian refugee families that have landed in Greensboro. In addition to many household items and clothing that members are donating, our Syrian Refugee Fund will help with rent and other expenses to help them get established in a very strange place for them. DONATIONS: We are grateful for so many donations of time and household goods to get these two families established. Right now, money is the most useful since we can take the families shopping for what they want (including groceries) and pay for rent and utilities. Our Christmas Eve offering of $3,500 went to our Syrian Refugee Fund, and you can donate money online at any…

    College Park’s Community Impact: $125,000 in 2015

You often hear about the economic impact that a company or major event has on a community. How do you measure the impact in dollars that College Park makes on our community and world? You certainly can’t put a price tag on the fellowship, support, counseling and education that hundreds of members and visitors receive. And how to compute the value of our building spaces used by so many other groups or service hours by members at organizations that we support? Our members are so talented in multiplying our gifts (think five loaves and two fish) to help thousands locally and internationally. Looking back at 2015, the “community impact” value of our cash donations, service hours and…

    Three Nickels Campaign 2016

College Park’s Three Nickels program began in 2009 for two reasons: College Park members agreed with Michael Usey that we should do more to help people living and dying in extreme poverty around the world. We believed that our congregation could be a witness to Greensboro that all of us can do a little more. The yearly goal of our Three Nickels fund is to have 100 College Park families or individuals pledge to give at least $1 per week, which equals 15¢ (three nickels) per day. The money donated is then given to ministries that operate outside North America, have been suggested by church members, and College Park’s Missions Committee…

Christmas Eve Offering: 50 Bee Hives for Guatemala

Each year, our Christmas Eve 2015 service offering goes to a helping organizational somewhere around the world. This year, we raised money for Heifer International to buy bee hives for farmers in Guatemala ($30 each). Our goal was $750. However, generous donations doubled that amount with a total of $1,525, supplying 50 bee hives! Why bee hives? Heifer International is partnering with families to build sustainable, self-reliant communities in many countries. A few years ago, we raised money to buy farm animals. This year, we are sending bees to pollinate the coffee and produce honey. In the process of searching for nectar, bees pollinate plants. The placement of a single colony can potentially double…

Out of the Garden Work Day Photos & Report

Roughly 50 College Parkers worked together on Sunday, November 15, 2015, to help feed local hungry families and have fun.  We worked at Out of the Garden Project (OOTGP) warehouse for a couple of hours as one of our quarterly church-wide service projects – packing enough bags of food for 600 students! Our local mission workdays are called Energeia (Greek for “working”). The Out of the Garden Project is a grassroots, volunteer-driven program that serves 15,000 meals a week to families of local, underserved public school children. The need is real; 67 percent of our kids receive free/reduced meals. So we say thank YOU! Find out how you can be part of Out…

    Worm Composting

Worm Composting The Daisy Girl Scouts who meet at College Park have put together a worm composting bin against the fence facing the playground, and they welcome scraps from groups using the church kitchen. The worms like fruit and vegetable scraps, coffee grounds and filters, rinsed eggshells, paper, bread and pasta. Please avoid composting dairy products, meat, spicy or salty foods, citrus peels, oils and processed/pre-packaged foods. The girls have posted signs in the kitchen as reminders. Just use the purple spade in the food pantry (or a stick) to push aside the top layer of newspaper, deposit the food and re-cover it. Please contact annekrishnan@gmail.com with any questions. Thank you…
